Preparing Your Vehicle for a Road Trip

The Spring Break season is upon us, and before you know it, it will be time to pack up the car and get a little R&R at your vacation of choice. Here at Bledsoe’s Towing and Automotive, we love nothing more than a good road trip, but we also know how important it is to make sure your car is in good working order first. Before you and your friends or family hit the road, here are a few things you should do to keep your car in tip-top shape.

Get A Check-Up

Just like you keep yourself in good condition by a regular check-up with your doctor, your car needs the same thought and care. Bring your vehicle out to the best auto maintenance shop at the Lake of the Ozarks and we’ll give everything a look to make sure it’s ready for the road. Here are a few things we’ll be paying attention to:

Engine Oil

Your vehicle needs engine oil to not only run efficiently but to run at all. If the oil is low, you’ll find your trip could be stopped before it ever got started. We can check your oil, and if the levels are low we can top them off. If you haven’t had an oil change recently, now is a great time to get one. Many vehicles need to have their oil changed every 3,000 miles, but you can refer to your owners manual, or your local auto shop at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Transmission & Differential Fluids

Your vehicles have other fluids besides oil. The transmission and drive axle have their own lubricant supply that needs to be checked on before your big trip. You can refer to you owner’s manual for their suggested change intervals since it’s normally longer than the engine oil.

Hoses

Rubber hoses are known to last around ten years if they just sit on a shelf - but when they are in your car they can be exposed to temperatures of over 200 degrees. Those high temps cause the rubber to become hard. When they become hard they can crack and then the fluids don’t stay where they’re supposed to.

Belts

There are many belts in your vehicles from the serpentine belt that runs the water pump to the timing belt. These belts also tend to have a habit of breaking at the most inopportune time, like when you’re stuck in the 2-mile traffic back-up.

Engine Coolant

Many vehicles come with engine coolant that is designed to go 100,000 to 150,000 miles. If your car is less than four years old, you’ll want to make sure that the under-hood coolant reservoir is topped up.

Road Trips to Remember

There are so many fun memories made on a road trip, but the one memory we don't’ want you to make it being stranded on the side of the road waiting for a tow truck at the Lake of the Ozarks (though, if you need one, we provide a 24-hour towing service at the Lake of the Ozarks.) Prepare for your trip by having your vehicle looked at before you leave and save yourself some unfortunate downtime. Bring your car out to Bledsoe’s Towing and we’ll get you ready for the road trip of a lifetime!

3 Tips For Caring For Your Windshield

This large piece of glass in your car plays a very vital role, and you probably only realize it when it's either dirty or broken. It's important to care for your windshield because if it's cracked or dirty, it can make it harder to see through, and then make you more dangerous on the road. At Bledsoe's Towing, we take care of windshield replacement at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we wanted to pass along a few tips to help you care for your windshield and keep it lasting longer.

Repair Chips and Cracks

Have you ever been driving down the highway, only to have a stone tossed back at your car to leave a nice little dent in your windshield? This happens to every driver at some point, but if you know how to take care of it, it really won't affect your ability to drive at all. You want to get this repaired immediately because small dents can become large cracks if left untreated. There are many insurance companies who even provide free chip and dent repair - and it's more cost effective to replace the chip than a whole windshield. If you do find that you need your windshield replaced, you can always call Bledsoe's Towing. We can replace windshields at the Lake of the Ozarks, and have you back on the road in no time!

Care For the Wiper Blades

Your wiper blades play more of a role in your windshield than just keeping them clean. In fact, if they are dirty or in bad condition, they can actually cause more harm than good. A dirty windshield wiper can actually leave scratches in your windshield that cause more harm than good. Occasionally, take a moment to wipe off your blades and make sure that they are in proper repair for your next drive.

Avoid Parking In Direct Sunlight

Aside from all of the other damage the sun can do to your car, did you know that direct sunlight can actually decrease the life of your windshield? When possible, try to park your car in the shade so it's not being beaten down by the sun, though sometimes, we realize it's inevitable. You can use a reflecting sun visor to help, but nothing is better for your glass than a nice shady spot.

Caring For More Than Just Your Windshield

From the front of your car to the back, Bledsoe's Towing wants to keep you on the road longer! There are many details that can go awry with your vehicle, from a flat tire, to s cracked windshield, but when you have Bledsoe's on your team you can know that you're in good hands. Trust the best mechanics at the Lake of the Ozarks to get the job done!

What Do Those Weird Car Noises Mean?

I'm sure we've all experienced that moment when you're driving down the HWY and then all of the sudden your car starts making the strangest noise. Some noises aren't a big deal, but others can be a critical sign that you need to have your car examined by an auto mechanic at the Lake of the Ozarks immediately. At Bledsoe's Towing & Automotive, we take great pride in discovering what needs to be repaired on your vehicle, and then doing it quickly and thoroughly. Here is a quick guide to give you an idea of what some sounds can mean before you bring it in to be examined, and how to describe the sound to your mechanic!

Squealing & Screeching When Braking

This could be a sign that you need new brake pads, rotor resurfacing or replacement. If your hardware is worn or broken, this results in the pad not releasing properly, which causes more noise and even excessive heat. New brake pads and replacing your brake rotors if necessary can help you stop safely and quietly, without causing further damage to your vehicle.

Grinding and Braking

This could be a sign that you may need new brake pads, calipers or rotors. If you hear these noises, it could mean that your brake pads weren't replaced in time, and now something could be rubbing against the brake rotors. It could be even worse if the brake calipers or pistons are grinding against the rotor because they're not supposed to.

Sputtering, Rumbling or Rattling From Under the Car

Does your car sound louder than it used to? There could be a possibility that there is a hole somewhere in your exhaust system. Sometimes it's as simple as re-attaching a loose pipe, or replacing a section of corroded pipe. Bring it into the best car mechanics at the Lake of the Ozarks, and we'll find the source of that strange noise!

Humming, Growling or Roaring Noise When Driving

Do you need new tires or wheel bearings? This sound can, in many cases indicate something serious, like a bad wheel bearing. This is something you'll want to get checked out immediately, so swing into your favorite tire shop at the Lake of the Ozarks and we'll get you back on the road!

Chirping or Squealing

This could be a sign that the drive belt needs to be replaced. This is also known as the serpentine belt, and it transfers power produced by the engine's revolutions to multiple sections of your car. It provides power to the air conditioning, power steering, and alternator, and over time this belt can wear down or slip, which causes the squealing.

Don't Ignore the Strange Sounds, Bring it to Bledsoe's Towing & Automotive!

Every odd sound your car makes can be a sign of something happening under the hood that shouldn't be. If you have any concerns with your vehicle, don't second guess yourself, and bring it in for us to take a look at it. We have been located at the Lake of the Ozarks since 1964, and we are proud to use our automotive experience to get you back on the faster and safer than ever before.

Emergency Items You Should Have In YOUR Car

Did you know that only 5% of drivers carry all of the recommended emergency supplies in their car? This figure can be astounding when you realize that the average number of car accidents in the U.S. is 6 million EVERY YEAR. One in twenty people have what they need in their car to be prepared for an emergency, and at Bledsoe's, we don't think that's enough. At Bledsoe's Towing and Automotive we see a lot of accidents, some major, some minor, and we believe it's important to have everything you need so you can handle the situation and be prepared.

Here are the suggested items that you need to keep in your vehicle so that you can be prepared for even the most minor fender bender.

Reflective Hazard Triangle or Road Flares

As long as it's safe to do so, you can put flares or reflective triangles behind your vehicle so that people will know you are there.

First-Aid Kit

This standard kit is obvious, even if you use it for scrapes on the baseball field. You won't regret carrying it around when you need it.

Jumper Cables

For obvious reasons, even if you aren't in an accident, jumper cables can be a huge help. In many cases, your car, or the car of someone else needs a jump, and you'll be thankful that you have these in those situations.

Windshield Scraper & Brush

Maybe you don't FEEL like you need these, but there can be freak storms, detours, and sometimes just getting lost where you could potentially run into winter weather and be glad you have this on hand.

Spare Tire

Many cars come with a spare tire in their trunk already, and if you don't have one, you need to make sure you do. You also want to have the supplies to change your tire, so if you have a surprise flat you can take care of it before bringing it to the best tire repair shop at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Blankets & Extra Warm Clothing

No matter what the weather looks like, a spare change of clothes and a blanket could come in handy. In the winter, you might want to wrap up in it when your car gets stranded, and in the summer you can always use it as a picnic blanket!

AM/FM Radio

If your car dies, and your either outside of cell phone reception or your phone has also died, you will be glad to have another source to listen to any updates.

Bottles of Water

You will want to have one bottle of water per person in your vehicle. A safe bet is to have one per seat in your car.

High Calorie, Nonperishable Food

Peanut butter, granola bars, crackers. There are many items you can find that will last, and you'll be glad to have them if you have to wait for any period of time for response vehicles to arrive.

Road Salt

This may not seem as important in the summer, but in the winter, if you get stuck anywhere, you'll want to have road salt or kitty litter to help you get out of snow drifts.

Brightly Colored Distress Sign

This is a small sign or flag that can attach to your antenna so alert others around that you are in distress.

Flashlight & Extra Batteries

You can use this to help see in the dark, and draw attention to yourself when you're stranded.

Tarp

This will come in handy if you are performing automotive work outside in any types of weather.

Spring Maintenance for Your Vehicle

Spring has sprung, and it's time to make sure your vehicle is in good working order so you can make it safely to your warm weather activities. Winter can bring some extreme wear and tear on your vehicle, through the salt that's on the roads, the cold temperatures, and hazardous driving. Now it's time to get everything back into pristine working order, and we know just what to do! At Bledsoe's Towing and Automotive, we take pride in getting you back on the road and keeping you there with the best car maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks. Here are a few important things you'll want to have checked on now that winter is behind us.

Batteries, Plugs, and Wires, OH MY!

If you want the spark in your vehicle to continue working, you'll want to make sure that the batteries, plugs, and wires are in good working order. Winter can compromise the performance of these pieces up to 60 percent. We can test and replace old or weak batteries, plugs, and wires, especially if they are older than three years.

Check Your Tire Pressure

The colder weather can reduce the pressure in your tires, so it's important to keep an eye on them. You'll also want to make sure that they are properly inflated and balanced as well. At Bledsoe's Towing & Automotive, we can help you make sure that all four of your tires are in good working order.

Belts and Hoses

If your belts are older than five years, you'll want to have them replaced, and now is as good of a time as any! We can inspect them and then replace the worn or cracked belts and hoses that are blistered, brittle, or too soft.

Brakes

No matter where you live, if you've driven through any type of snow or ice, it's always advisable to inspect the brake system. This includes the lines, hoses, parking brake, and brake fluid. The brakes on our vehicle are extremely important, and something as simple as need a brake pad change can put an end to your worries.

Fluid Levels

Engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant, and even windshield washer fluid can affect the reliability of your vehicle if they aren't at the correct levels. When all of these are checked, you may find that your car begins to run as good as new!

Windshield Wipers

Ice and snow can play a mean trick on your windshield wipers. They can also get torn, ripped, and chipped from the harsh weather. New windshield wipers can make a world of difference when you are trying to drive through the rainy spring season.

Best Automotive Company at the Lake of the Ozarks

When you're ready to get your car in pristine condition from the winter months, come out to Bledsoe's Towing and Automotive. Our skilled technicians can help you not only keep your car running but can diagnose any problems that you may be experiencing with your vehicle. Come visit us today for friendly and reliable service!

"I wanted to sincerely thank you all for the honest, fast, courteous, and quality service that I received in October of this year!
I was on a work assignment to Osage Beach when I became stranded with an alternator issue with my 2002 Kia Sedona. I was very concerned that I would not be able to get back to Kirksville, Missouri with the vehicle and would incur an extreme expense due to the problem. To my relief, your team along with ASAP Rebuilders had my vehicle up and running the next day at a reasonable cost.
I just wanted to thank you for the exceptional work on my behalf!"
Sincerely,
Jim Nugent
Kirksville, MO

"We would like to Thank You for the wonderful way you treated us getting the U-haul truck fixed and letting us use the rental car to go get breakfast, then getting us on our way back to Ohio.
You are the kind of person and run a business that makes the world a much better place."
Thank you so very much.
Richard, Kathy and Bryan Estes

"What a relief it is to know that when I take my car to this shop, not only will they be able to diagnose the problem, but they will charge me a surprisingly fair rate. I can't remember how many times I've replied, "That's all?!" in response to my question, "How much do I owe you?". To have a local shop you can trust and depend on means so much."

"Don't let this happen to you. I was lucky I was not hurt. I thought to myself there is only one towing company that could get me out of this predicament. Bledsoe's Automotive Services and Towing. Great Job Bledsoe!"

Caring For Your Car Through the Winter

There have been many signs that spring is around the corner, but winter is still threatening us with chilly temperatures and vague hints of snow. If you haven't taken precautionary methods to protecting your car from the cold elements, now is the time to do so. The harsh weather and chemicals used to clean up snow and ice can take a toll on your vehicle. Use these easy tips to keep your car in great condition, and ready to cruise in the spring!

Conserve Your Battery

Your battery will take a hard hit through the winter months, and the cold air will cause it to reduce it's cranking power. In fact, a battery at 0° has only half the cranking power of a battery in 80° weather. It's important to check the levels of your battery, and if this isn't something you know how to do, bring it out to Bledsoe's Towing & Automotive. A few things to keep in mind as you are considering whether to get a new battery or not, is if it's more than five years old, and start to show signs of weakness, it's time to get a new car battery at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Care For Your Windshield Wipers

Winter can be especially hard on your windshield wipers. From the ice, snow, rain, and freezing temperatures, there are many reasons to replace them. In fact, you may need to replace your windshield wipers more than you ever thought. They recommend that you replace them at least 2 times per year, and if you see streaking or unclear spots on your window, that's a sure sign that you need new blades.  We can help you with this, and show you which blades will be the best for your vehicle.

Clear Your Windows

If you keep your car outside, it's always a good practice to either scrape your windows off in the morning or go out ten minutes early and turn the defrost on. You never want to run your blades over an ice or frost covered windshield. Some cars don't have heaters in the side mirrors, so you may also need to remember to scrape those off as well.

Check the Oil

Cold weather can cause motor oil to thicken, which can put a strain on your engine. It's important to bring your car out to Bledsoe's and get the oil checked. While your car is in the shop, you can also ask us to check out your radiator and heater hoses for cracks, leaks or contamination.

Consider New Tires

Sliding across snow and ending up in a ditch isn't the best way to find out that your tires are worn out and you need new ones. Bring your car over and we can take a look at them to find out if they are still good to go for more miles, or if it's time to retire them and get new ones.

Best Automotive at the Lake of the Ozarks

Since 1964, Bledsoe's Automotive and Towing has been providing quality auto service to the Lake of the Ozarks. We can care for your vehicle in our shop, helping you maintain it, and keep it in working order. We can also come out and give you a tow or even get your keys out of your car!
