Emergency Items You Should Have In YOUR Car

Did you know that only 5% of drivers carry all of the recommended emergency supplies in their car? This figure can be astounding when you realize that the average number of car accidents in the U.S. is 6 million EVERY YEAR. One in twenty people have what they need in their car to be prepared for an emergency, and at Bledsoe's, we don't think that's enough. At Bledsoe's Towing and Automotive we see a lot of accidents, some major, some minor, and we believe it's important to have everything you need so you can handle the situation and be prepared.

Here are the suggested items that you need to keep in your vehicle so that you can be prepared for even the most minor fender bender.

Reflective Hazard Triangle or Road Flares

As long as it's safe to do so, you can put flares or reflective triangles behind your vehicle so that people will know you are there.

First-Aid Kit

This standard kit is obvious, even if you use it for scrapes on the baseball field. You won't regret carrying it around when you need it.

Jumper Cables

For obvious reasons, even if you aren't in an accident, jumper cables can be a huge help. In many cases, your car, or the car of someone else needs a jump, and you'll be thankful that you have these in those situations.

Windshield Scraper & Brush

Maybe you don't FEEL like you need these, but there can be freak storms, detours, and sometimes just getting lost where you could potentially run into winter weather and be glad you have this on hand.

Spare Tire

Many cars come with a spare tire in their trunk already, and if you don't have one, you need to make sure you do. You also want to have the supplies to change your tire, so if you have a surprise flat you can take care of it before bringing it to the best tire repair shop at the Lake of the Ozarks.

Blankets & Extra Warm Clothing

No matter what the weather looks like, a spare change of clothes and a blanket could come in handy. In the winter, you might want to wrap up in it when your car gets stranded, and in the summer you can always use it as a picnic blanket!

AM/FM Radio

If your car dies, and your either outside of cell phone reception or your phone has also died, you will be glad to have another source to listen to any updates.

Bottles of Water

You will want to have one bottle of water per person in your vehicle. A safe bet is to have one per seat in your car.

High Calorie, Nonperishable Food

Peanut butter, granola bars, crackers. There are many items you can find that will last, and you'll be glad to have them if you have to wait for any period of time for response vehicles to arrive.

Road Salt

This may not seem as important in the summer, but in the winter, if you get stuck anywhere, you'll want to have road salt or kitty litter to help you get out of snow drifts.

Brightly Colored Distress Sign

This is a small sign or flag that can attach to your antenna so alert others around that you are in distress.

Flashlight & Extra Batteries

You can use this to help see in the dark, and draw attention to yourself when you're stranded.

Tarp

This will come in handy if you are performing automotive work outside in any types of weather.

Spring Maintenance for Your Vehicle

Spring has sprung, and it's time to make sure your vehicle is in good working order so you can make it safely to your warm weather activities. Winter can bring some extreme wear and tear on your vehicle, through the salt that's on the roads, the cold temperatures, and hazardous driving. Now it's time to get everything back into pristine working order, and we know just what to do! At Bledsoe's Towing and Automotive, we take pride in getting you back on the road and keeping you there with the best car maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks. Here are a few important things you'll want to have checked on now that winter is behind us.

Batteries, Plugs, and Wires, OH MY!

If you want the spark in your vehicle to continue working, you'll want to make sure that the batteries, plugs, and wires are in good working order. Winter can compromise the performance of these pieces up to 60 percent. We can test and replace old or weak batteries, plugs, and wires, especially if they are older than three years.

Check Your Tire Pressure

The colder weather can reduce the pressure in your tires, so it's important to keep an eye on them. You'll also want to make sure that they are properly inflated and balanced as well. At Bledsoe's Towing & Automotive, we can help you make sure that all four of your tires are in good working order.

Belts and Hoses

If your belts are older than five years, you'll want to have them replaced, and now is as good of a time as any! We can inspect them and then replace the worn or cracked belts and hoses that are blistered, brittle, or too soft.

Brakes

No matter where you live, if you've driven through any type of snow or ice, it's always advisable to inspect the brake system. This includes the lines, hoses, parking brake, and brake fluid. The brakes on our vehicle are extremely important, and something as simple as need a brake pad change can put an end to your worries.

Fluid Levels

Engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant, and even windshield washer fluid can affect the reliability of your vehicle if they aren't at the correct levels. When all of these are checked, you may find that your car begins to run as good as new!

Windshield Wipers

Ice and snow can play a mean trick on your windshield wipers. They can also get torn, ripped, and chipped from the harsh weather. New windshield wipers can make a world of difference when you are trying to drive through the rainy spring season.

Best Automotive Company at the Lake of the Ozarks

First Things To Do When Involved in A Car Accident

An accident can be a very scary time for you, whether it's a fender-bender or a major accident, we want you to stay safe. There are so many things that will be going through your mind as you try to figure out what to do after you've been involved in any type of collision, but there are a few key things that you must remember to do.

STOP

One of the first things you MUST remember is to always stop. When you are involved in any form of collision, you must never drive away. Make sure that you and your passengers are not harmed, and then observe your situation. If you vehicle is in a place where you could be in more danger, such as the middle of the road, and your car is able to move, pull it to the side of the road, but never leave the scene.

PROTECT THE SCENE

You want to protect the scene, but you also want to protect yourself and anyone involved. Put your hazards one or set up flares. If it is dark outside and your lights will not come one, use a flashlight to help direct attention to your location. Always put yourself in a safe place, and do not stay in harms way.

CALL THE POLICE

Even if there are no serious damages, it's always best to call the authorities. You may need a police report in order to file with your insurance. Even if you're just making a claim on your vehicle, it could come in handy.

MAKE A RECORD

When the investigating officer arrives, be sure to tell him what happened to the best of your ability. If you don't remember all of the details, be sure to say so and don't make anything up. When they ask if you are injured, if you are not sure, it's always best to say so. Some vehicle injuries won't become apparent until hours after the accident.

TAKE PHOTOS

Photos are an excellent way to document the exact damages to your vehicle. If you have experienced any injuries, you will want to take photos of those as well. Keep in mind, that if the officers are already there, you do not want to impede their investigation by trying to take photos, you may have to wait until they leave before getting everything you need if you didn't get it before.

EXCHANGE INFORMATION

Generally, an officer will arrive and collect that information, but you can also collect it yourself before they arrive. Get the name, phone number and address of all of the people involved - driver and passengers alike. If there are witnesses, you can get their contact information in case your insurance provider needs to learn more about what happened.

REPORT THE ACCIDENT

You will need to report the accident to your insurance provider as soon as possible. Some insurance agencies require immediate notification of any accidents.

SEEK MEDICAL ATTENTION

Even if you think you weren't hurt, many collision injuries are not apparent until days later. Even if it was just a small collision, you should go to your local emergency room and get examined. If you blacked out for even a short period of time it could indicate a concussion, and those can be signals of minor or serious issues.

After you have finished all of the legalities involved in a car accident, the next thing you'll need to determine is if your car is still driveable. If you are unable to start your vehicle, make sure to call Bledsoe's Towing & Automotive at 573-346-7050. Not only can we tow your vehicle, but we can bring it into the shop and help you determine whether it can be fixed or not. Bledsoe's Towing wishes you many safe driving miles, but if anything should happen, remember these easy tips on how to handle the situation, and don't forget that we would love to provide the best automotive maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks.
