New Year's Resolutions For Your Car

It's never too late to make resolutions, and when it involves your car it's always better late than never. Stay Up-To-Date on Oil Changes

Having fresh, clean oil in your vehicle is an important way you can keep it running for longer. Be sure to keep up on oil changes by finding ways to remember them. If you drive a lot and you hit the mile limit before the time limit, make a point to check your mileage on a specific day of the week when you'll be in your vehicle. If you only need your oil changed every 3 months, set an alarm on your phone to remind you when your next oil change should be.

Watch Your Tire Pressure

As the weather and temperatures change and fluctuate your tire pressure will be affected. When the air is warm it will cause the air inside your tires to expand and when the air is cold it will cause your tire pressure to contract. This explains why your tire pressure light will come on when it's cold outside, and then go off after you've driven for a little while and the tires warm up. How to Successfully Travel with Your Pets

With school starting soon, families will be cramming fun trips into the final weeks of summer. Of course, you don't want to forget about the furry member of your family when you travel. It's not impossible to travel with pets, in fact, it's quite easy, but you do need to be aware of a few things as you pack them up and take them across the country. At Bledsoe's Towing, we know how important it is to your family to get out of town for a while and enjoy eachother's company, we just want to make sure you're safe while at it. Here are a few ways to easily travel with your four legged friends.

Prepare Them For the Trip

If your pet doesn't ride in the car often, you can prepare them for the trip by taking them for shorter trips beforehand. With each trip, make it just a bit longer to increase their comfort level with the ride. Also remember to bring along the important documents like a rabies vaccination record. This generally isn't required, but there are some interstate crossings that require this type of proof. You should also make sure that their name tag is updated with your address and get them a travel tag with your cell phone number, just in case.

Provide Safety in the Car

Depending on your dog, you can either keep them in a crate or buckle them into a car harness. If you decide to use a crate, make sure that it is large enough that they can stand, sit, lie down, and turn around in. Secure the crate in your vehicle in case you come to any abrupt stops. If you don't want to use a crate, you can also look for a harness that attaches to the seat buckle.

Pack a Pet-Friendly Travel Kit

Especially if you'll be in the car for a long period of time, you'll want to have several things packed and within easy grasp. You'll want food, a bowl, leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first-aid supplies - as well as any travel documents. Bring their favorite toy along, or even buy them a new one as a surprise. Don't forget that you won't want to feed them in the car, and you should give them a light meal three to four hours prior to departure. You can also minimize the risk of stomach discomfort by bringing bottled water instead of giving them water that they aren't used to.

PLEASE Don't Leave Your Animal Alone In the Car

Whether it's hot or cold, even if the windows are open - don't leave your pet in the vehicle. A parked vehicle can become like a furnace in minutes, and heatstroke can happen faster than you think. In cold weather, your cold can hold in the cold and turn your car into a refrigerator. This can cause your poor pet to freeze quickly.

The Ins and Outs of Your Engine

Have you ever been curious about what exactly happens when you start your car? Or how your car even propels you down the highway as you head to work in the morning? Because knowledge is power, we wanted to give you a little inside knowledge about how your engine works so that you can accurately describe problems that may arise or even just know for fun facts around the dinner table!

First Things First

While you may have thought that the description of a vehicle was that it is just a metal box with wheels, from a scientific point of view it's really an energy converter. The machine that you know as your car releases energy that is locked in a fuel, like gasoline, and then turns it into mechanical energy which is what causes your wheels to turn and you to move down the road.

Many moving vehicles are powered by fuels that are made from petroleum. The "crude oil" became an important source of energy during the 20th century, and while there are a few other ways to power a vehicle, this one remains the most prominent.

How Does Our Fuel Power Our Vehicle?

Petroleum fuels are made from hydrocarbons, which are mainly carbon and hydrogen atoms - with a few other elements.While you commonly burn hydrocarbons to make useful energy, like wood, paper or coal in your fireplace, grill, or fire pit, these are uncontrolled sources of energy.  While the combustion does occur from the hydrocarbons releasing energy, in a camp fire it can be hard to control that energy because the heat shoots off in all different directions.

In your car, those hydrocarbons are burned in closed containers that capture most of the heat energy the fuel releases, and then it turns it into a mechanical energy that can drive your car.

What Are the Main Parts of A Car Engine

Now that we know how a car engine is powered, it's time to learn some more about what actually happens when it's powered. The closed containers we mentioned that capture the energy are known as cylinders. In most cars, you'll find four cylinders (also know as a four stroke engine) but in many powerful cars, you'll find six or even eight. The cylinders are sealed shut, except for two valves that open and close like a bicycle pump. There are pistons (think of them like plungers) that slide up and down inside the cylinders. There is an inlet valve that allows fuel and air to enter the cylinder from the carburetor and the outlet valve that lets the exhaust gasses back out. There are also spark plugs (you may have heard this term at one point from your Lake of the Ozarks car mechanic), and these are electrically controlled devices that make a spark and cause the fuel to catch fire. At the bottom of the cylinder, you'll find a piston which is attached to a crankshaft, and this powers the car's gearbox which is what drives the wheels.

Decoding the Lights On My Dashboard - Part 2

Have you ever been driving down the road only to realize that there is a light on your dashboard that you don't recognize? It happens to everyone, so that's why we want to provide you with the information you need so you can easily recognize what the light stands for. At Bledsoe's Towing and Automotive, we realize that there are many things that happen while you're out on the road, and we want to make it as easy as possible for you to get back out there, whether you need towing at the Lake of the Ozarks, or simple vehicle maintenance at the Lake of the Ozarks. Here is part two of our Decoding the Lights on My Dashboard, and we hope it can help you out!

Tire Pressure Monitoring System

This light is a warning that there has been a drop in air pressure in one or more of your tires. Some vehicles have it where they will show you which tire is low, others just give you a warning that one is and you can bring it to us to figure out. If any of your tires are low, it's important to get them filled up as quickly as possible. If you have to keep adding air on a routine basis, then you may have a leak in your tire.

Oil Pressure Light

This could indicate one of two things - either your sensor that activates the oil pressure has failed, or your engine has low oil pressure. We figure it's better to assume the pressure is low and bring it out to Bledsoe's Towing and Automotive. If the light is just disconnected, we can try to fix that for you and you'll be on your merry way! Otherwise, if the oil pressure really is low, than we've just saved you from being stranded!

Fog Lamp Indicator

This just alerts you to the fact that your fog lights are lit up. If you aren't having issues seeing, and there isn't any fog, you can turn these off.

Low Fuel Light

This is one of the more important lights on your dashboard, because if it shows up, you need to make your way to the nearest gas station and fuel up. If it shows up while you still have a full tank of gas, you should bring it out to us and let us see where the error is. We would hate for you to be stranded because of a dashboard malfunction. Every vehicle has a different amount of miles you can go when the light comes on, but it's best to not wait that long.

Headlight Indicator

If you were driving late last night and you turned your car off with your brights still illuminated, then this light will let you know that you need to turn them off and back down to your regular head lights.

What's Under My Car Hood?

Have you ever needed to get under the hood of your car and been completely confused as to what you were looking at? It's important to know the individual details that make up your car engine so you can correctly explain to one of our Lake of the Ozarks car mechanics where the sound or smoke was coming from. We know that there is a lot happening under the hood of your car, so here at Bledsoe's we aim to make it easier on you!

Here are a few of the key things you'll want to be able to recognize and point out under your hood so that you and your car can work together in harmony. Of course, if you don't know what something is, we always recommend coming into our shop and letting one of our experts take a look at it.

What's Under My Hood?

1. Engine

This is what runs your car, literally. Most of the time it's the largest thing under the hood, and everything revolves around it. Your engine is full of spark plugs, valves, rods and moving pieces. There's a camshaft, timing chain or belt, pistons and connecting rods. All of these pieces need to be cared for appropriately, but this is something you should leave up to the car experts at the Lake of the Ozarks.

2. Radiator

This is a large piece that is found at the front of your car right behind the grill. It has a large fan and is used to cool the engine. There is often a small hose that is attached to a plastic overflow container, you can refer to number three to locate this particular piece.

3. Engine Coolant 

This is where you coolant fluid goes. Though we do recommend that you refer to your owners manual, or your Lake of the Ozarks car mechanic before putting anything in here. When your car overheats, one cause can be because you are out of coolant, and you have to put a special mixture of fluids into this reservoir.

4. Battery

The plastic box with two knobs on top is your battery. Generally, one knob is black and one is red, and this shows you which cable goes on which knob when you have to jump your car, or someone else's. It's important to always use caution when working with your battery because it can cause sparks.

5. Wiper Fluid Reservoir

Do NOT confuse this with your radiator coolant container! Your windshield wiper fluid reservoir should have a logo on it that looks like your wiper blades. If you run out of wiper fluid, you can replace this yourself, but we recommend referring to your owner's manual. You can also ask us to take care of topping it off when you come in for your next oil change at the Lake of the Ozarks!

6. Oil Dipstick

This is not the same type of "dipstick" as the idiot at work...but this is in fact, where you check to see if your oil is low. Before you start your car and heat it up, pull out the dipstick and wipe it off with a clean rag, put the stick back in the pipe, and pull it back out again. You can now look at the film of oil on the end of the stick and if it's between the full and low lines, you should be good to go! Place the dipstick back in the pipe and be on your merry way.

What Do Those Weird Car Noises Mean?

I'm sure we've all experienced that moment when you're driving down the HWY and then all of the sudden your car starts making the strangest noise. Some noises aren't a big deal, but others can be a critical sign that you need to have your car examined by an auto mechanic at the Lake of the Ozarks immediately. Spring Maintenance for Your Vehicle

Spring has sprung, and it's time to make sure your vehicle is in good working order so you can make it safely to your warm weather activities. Winter can bring some extreme wear and tear on your vehicle, through the salt that's on the roads, the cold temperatures, and hazardous driving. Now it's time to get everything back into pristine working order, and we know just what to do! Here are a few important things you'll want to have checked on now that winter is behind us.

Batteries, Plugs, and Wires, OH MY!

If you want the spark in your vehicle to continue working, you'll want to make sure that the batteries, plugs, and wires are in good working order. Winter can compromise the performance of these pieces up to 60 percent. We can test and replace old or weak batteries, plugs, and wires, especially if they are older than three years.

Check Your Tire Pressure

The colder weather can reduce the pressure in your tires, so it's important to keep an eye on them. You'll also want to make sure that they are properly inflated and balanced as well. At Bledsoe's Towing & Automotive, we can help you make sure that all four of your tires are in good working order.

Belts and Hoses

If your belts are older than five years, you'll want to have them replaced, and now is as good of a time as any! We can inspect them and then replace the worn or cracked belts and hoses that are blistered, brittle, or too soft.

Engine oil, transmission fluid, brake fluid, antifreeze/coolant, and even windshield washer fluid can affect the reliability of your vehicle if they aren't at the correct levels. When all of these are checked, you may find that your car begins to run as good as new!

Windshield Wipers

Ice and snow can play a mean trick on your windshield wipers. They can also get torn, ripped, and chipped from the harsh weather. New windshield wipers can make a world of difference when you are trying to drive through the rainy spring season.
